The Department of Macromolecular Science and the Institute of Macromolecular Science of Fudan University were established in May, 1993. They originated from the teaching and research group of Macromolecular Science of the Department of Chemistry (1958-1982), the Institute of Macromolecules (1958-1962), and the teaching and research group of the Department of Material Science (1983-1993). They are one of the first academic and research units devoted to Macromolecular Science in China, and also one of the first State-established units that are entitled to granting degrees of Master and Ph.D. in Macromolecular Science as well as providing postdoctoral posts. The open laboratory of Polymer Engineering was established under the approvement of the former State Education Comission in Feb. 1994, and later in 1999 renamed as the Key laboratory of the State Education Department in Polymer Engineering after a thorough inspection and evaluation. The program of Polymer Chemistry in our Department was approved as one of the Key programs in Shanghai; our program was listed as one of the Key programs under construction of Fudan University’s “211 Project” in 1996, and also was listed as one of the nine most important programs to construct in the future in 2000; the State Education Department approved our department as a post for the special hired Professor post of the “Changjiang Scholar Awarding Project” in 1999. Our Department has had a rapid progress after several generations’ effort. Now, she has competent faculties and comprehensive facilities, and becomes an important base for training the scientists and engineers in Macromolecular Science and conducting scientific research in this discipline
